Extension of the Term for the Interagency Advisory Panel and Secretariat on Research Ethics

Ottawa (April 27, 2009)—Presidents Alain Beaudet of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Suzanne Fortier of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and Chad Gaffield of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) are pleased to announce that the term of the Interagency Advisory Panel on Research Ethics (the Panel) and the Secretariat on Research Ethics (Secretariat) has been extended until November 30, 2011. The Panel will continue its work on evolution, education and interpretation of the TCPS. With the continuation of the Panel’s mandate, a public call for nominations for membership on the Panel will be announced in September 2009.

Created in November 2001 as a joint initiative of CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC, the Panel and the Secretariat are mandated to advise the Agencies on the evolution and development of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS). The TCPS sets out the principles and basic standards and processes for research ethics policies and practices of institutions receiving Agency funding.

The Panel is a committee of 12 members drawn from across the country to represent a wide spectrum of disciplines and experience in the ethics of human research. Current members include research participants and researchers in areas such as ethics, anthropology, research administration, sociology, political science, medicine, clinical research, psychology, public health, environmental and nutrition toxicology, engineering, bioethics and law, and research involving Aboriginal peoples. For biographical information on the Panel members, visit the Panel’s website at www.pre.ethics.gc.ca/eng/panel-group/about-apropos/members-membres/.
